Bio – Kevin Thurston

Kevin Thurston (Coach Kevin) is an AAU certified basketball coach that has been providing his expert insights and positively impacting the kids he has coached across various AAU, travel, and house level teams for over 20 years.  Additionally, his experience crosses over into many other sports including baseball, where he spent 10 years coaching little league and travel baseball teams.  His passion for both the sport and more importantly for the kids he coaches enables him to reach them in a unique manner that maximizes their ability to reach their potential.

Kevin began his basketball career coaching girl’s house and travel basketball for the City of Falls Church.  After multiple successful seasons, he changed gears and started coaching the boys travel teams for SYA.  One of the highlights of his career includes recent letters of appreciation he received from several of his former players.  They thanked him for his time and dedication to the sport but more importantly they thanked him for positively effecting their lives by teaching them the philosophy of living with passion, always doing your best, and being grateful.   You can find some of these players still playing the game at the collegiate level.  Kevin’s philosophy is highlighted by helping young athletes reach their potential through hard work and putting the team first.

Recently Coach Kevin switched back to coaching girls basketball for SYA’s travel team and the Potomac Valley Vogues AAU team.  The travel team showed a tremendous development in the fundamentals and understanding of the game, making a run into the semifinals in the FCYBL playoffs.  The AAU team medaled multiple times, including several undefeated tournaments.  This included playing “up” against older competition.  They also earned the bronze medal in the Potomac Valley AAU 4th Grade Division 1 District Championship and a bid to the AAU National Championships.  His teams with the Vogues have qualified for Nationals every year since he has been involved with the program.
